Canada: single-events sports betting to be legal from August 27

David Lametti, Canada’s minister of justice and attorney general, has announced that single-event sports betting will be permitted in Canada from August 27. Lametti made the announcement at a news conference at Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

He said: “This law will come into force on August 27. Canadians will have the opportunity to participate in single-event sport betting in a regulated and safe environment, at the discretion of the provinces and territories.”

The Senate passed bill C-218 in June, amending a line in the Canadian Criminal Code to allow single-event sports wagering in the country. It will be up to each of Canada’s provinces and territories to decide how to implement the activity. Some provinces have already said that they will move quickly to put rules in place.
